I was youtubing Nayyara Noor's songs and found this video from an old Pakistani movie. Sent me sentient at how the Pakistani movie industry has transformed over the years into something utterly hopeless, vulgar and bizarre of an institution rather than a liberating one which had a positive influence over its people. True the world wasn't a "Global Village" back in the 70s but we weren't living in an Iron Curtain either.

The slow demise of intellectual movies in Pakistan cannot be blamed on foreign media totally. Part of the problem can be blamed on the hatred sprouting in the late 70s and early 80s after which the people divided themselves into groups, communities and political parties aimed at getting what they wanted at the price of patriotism and ardor for country-men. Sending the intellects and great-thinkers of our nation into the background and letting opportunists and separatists take control of our lives.

But, I digress from the reason I'm writing this post. Our efforts to mimic and adopt the very opposite of our culture has led us to some place completely different. For one loses his/her own path blindly following the other's, such is the price of "globalization".

Mourners cause mourning

Yetsernight, my brother in law visited us and we sat down at dinner and discussed a lot of what has happened in the last seven days. We got to talk about the very tragedies and destruction told first hand by friends.

The first event he told us happened to one of his very close friends. One of his four year old son was very sick on 27th December, 2007, the day of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. The news had already spread and he was worrying about his kid. Not knowing what to do, he got his bike out and took his son with him in search of a safe way to the hospital. He literally dodged bullets and some how reached the hospital. When he stopped the bike, his clothes were stained with blood and he started to panic if he was hit. Upon inspection he did not find any wounds on him and neither did he feel any pain or stings.

What he found out was far more worrying and tragic than he had expected. His four year old son, had been shot in the neck and blood was gushing out of the wound. He was paralyzed for a moment but then he realized that his son wasn't crying or not even responding. He was already at the hospital, so he took him to the emergency. He was pronounced dead shortly after that.

How many more lives will be taken befoe this blood feud will end? I just hope and pray, none.

Calm Karachi

After five days of violence, Karachi was calm on 1st January 2008, with no reports of unrest anywhere in the city. Army can be seen patrolling the roads of Karachi providing physical and mental safety from rioters and robbers alike.

One incident of an oil tanker set on fire near Gharo has been reported. Though it is not known if it was an act of arson or simply an accident.

Elections 2008

PML (N) had declared to boycott January elections immediately after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. The fate of PPP was undecided until after BB's will was read out at Bhutto residence in Larkana. It was decided on 30th December that PPP will contest January 8 elections and that Makhdoom Amin Fahim will contest for Prime Minister. Shortly after their decision, PML (N) also decided to contest the elections.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has postponed the elections scheduled for 8th January, 2008. They have yet to decide a date for the elections. The move came after all political parties contesting the elections, except PPP, requested that they be postponed until second week of March. The party leaders had expressed their concerns over safety and security during the rallies held as part of their respective political campaigns.

Three women are confirmed to be shot dead in Paposh. They were killed by PPP activists in an attempt to forcefully close shops and businesses. Armed MQM activists are patrolling the area and making people open shops.

Benazir Bhutto assassination conspiracy - In depth analysis

It was a tragic day for all, political parties and civilians alike. The eve of 27th December, 2007, has been marked as the gloomiest day in the history of Pakistan and Pakistani politics and rightly so but for different reasons. Benazir Bhutto has passed away and named Asif Ali Zardari, her husband as the chair of PPP. He in turn named his son, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, a nineteen year old Oxford University Politics major and their eldest child and only son.

The speed with which President Pervez Musharraf started blaming the terrorist for this horrendous act, matches that of his favored contemporaries in Washington. With in one hour of the confirmation of BB's assassination, it was blamed on Alqaeda and Taleban. This is not to say that she had not voiced her concern on the issue of Alqaeda or Taleban threatening her, no denying in that. It is simply a matter of listening to the victim here, which the government successfully failed to do so. Let me explain.

Since the day she landed here in Karachi, the PPP officials had been complaining about the security breaches and security devices' failures. There had been several complaints about radio jammers not working, but unfortunately they went all in vain. That ended in two bombs going off near the homecoming motor cavalcade, of which one went off within 10 metres range. That claimed the life of as many as 138 innocent people, including the minimal police escort and private guards of BB. After that it became evident the enemy would stop at nothing. The PPP never stopped campaigning, even though it received several other threats and warnings.

The most warned about and the most dangerous places of all was indeed Rawalpindi for her. The speech was delivered in Liaquat Bagh, the same Liaquat Bagh in which Liaquat Ali Khan, one of the founding members of Pakistan, was shot in 1952 and was named after him. The speech went smooth and she returned to her vehicle. When the vehicle reached the back gate of Liaquat Bagh, the supporters starting chanting slogans and she stood in the sun roof of a bullet and bomb proof Toyota SUV, and waived back to the crowd despite of being warned by close friends. The attacker approached from the right side and four shots were heard and a moment after that a bomb went off. That resulted in the demise of BB and 38 other people including 1 suspected terrorist and 1 confirmed terrorist, the identity of whom still remain unknown.

What followed is beyond my capacity to form into a coherent script, for the grief and sorrow beset Pakistanis more than they could anticipate. The news spread faster than jungle fire leaving Pakistanis confused at first, shocked, and then worrying at the end. In metropolitans as large as Karachi, the second most populated city in the world (as of 2005 according to wikipedia), also the most sensitive Pakistani city with regards to politics, when news like this is heard everyone thinks of the same thing. To get to home safely. In a city of 16 million people (unconfirmed), we outrun the already spacious roads when everyone tries to get to home at the same time.

Soon, angry mourners took to streets and started burning vehicles, while opportunists started robbing and looting. This continued for three days. Throughout the country scenes of chaos were seen. In Sindh province orders were given to the police and rangers to shoot any miscreants at sight. Still they managed to burn down 2 trains, 1000+ vehicles, around 40 banks, 4 factories (only in Karachi), around 50 gas stations, and claimed the life of 25+ people including a 10 year old boy. It was like we were in the middle of a civil war. Trapped in our homes, running out of food supplies, and getting information only through TV and internet.

On 28th December, 2007, the Ministry of Interior held a press conference and claimed to have determined the cause of death only to be proved wrong by a video (posted earlier) and an amateur photographer present at the scene whose pictures prove that the gunshots killed her. Also they name Betullah Mehsud, a high ranking Alqaeda commander to be the master mind behind the assassination. He rejects the accusation. The ministry is clearly derailing and digressing the investigation and indulges in time wasting arguments on how she got killed even after the pictures and the video clearly show what exactly happened.

The most disturbing part of the conference was when the minister read out a translation of a conversation between Betullah Mehsud and "Some Maulvi Sahab". They did not play the original conversation recorded, this is where the trust is lost. The second point where it becomes doubtful is when a reporter asks a question regarding the call trace. At that, the minister simply dodged the question delivering an incomplete and incoherent mumble. President Pervez Musharraf and his administration simply refused the intervention of any independent investigation bieng carried out the first day. On the third day he agrees to let an independent investigation being conducted. Don't forget, Pervez Musharraf also ordered three days of mourning in which schools, offices and government offices were to remain closed.

Where do these all facts add up? Lets start with the investigation report. It is moot and a dangerous accusation said PPP activist Sherry Rehman. She bathed Benazir Bhutto after her death and confirmed the bullet wounds on the back of her head. It was also proved by the three photographs released on 29th December, 2007, that she was indeed killed by gunshots. Betullah Mehsud's conversation seems too bold to have been carried out just after the attacks and he denies the accusations. There were several complaints regarding failure of radio jammers in the area. Above all, the suicide bomber was able to bypass security when there were only limited entrances to where she was.

Lets move on to the situation every where else in Pakistan. In the whole country, PPP activists wreaked havoc and burnt property and vehicles at their whim. Only those areas were safe that were PPP majority. Witnesses say MQM was involved in 27th and 28th's carnage in the cities of Karachi and Hyderabad (source, referred by). Furthermore, MQM's chair, Altaf Hussain, has released a very controversial remark about only the Sindhi Prime Minister's getting assassinated. Let me make this clear that there have been only three democratically elected PM's of Pakistan uptil now which are Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Benaznir Bhutto, and Nawaz Sharif. This comment will only fan the conflict between the provinces of Sindh and Punjab. In the area of Sohrab Goth, dominated by Afghanis, there have been reports of looting and robberies. I state only about Karachi here, but things were not much different in other cities with locals looting and robbing the then helpless victims of angry mourners. As I said earlier, it seemed we were in a Civil war.

Thirdly, it was known that if Ms. Bhutto won the elections and eventually became the Prime Minister, she would have reversed the amendment passed by Musharraf which give the president supreme power in the event of an emergency rule. She would have forced Musharraf to resign from the post of President, which is dear to him more than anything in the world.

Has this situation throughout the country been created deliberately? If so, who is responsible for it? Why did the government hide facts about Bhutto's assassination? Why is Pervez Mushharraf blaming Alqaeda for her assassination without sound proof? Why was the call of Betullah Mehsud never traced? Why did Musharraf only agree to an independent investigation after the three day mourning period in which there was no activity in the whole country!? Is the government trying to cover up yet another murder? Was army deployed in the country to undermine the possibility of a free and fair election?

These are the questions that we need answers to. We, Pakistanis do not want pointless debates as to whether Benazir died due to hitting her head on the lever or she got shot. We need answers now and we're waiting anxiously.

President Evil - Prevalence

I hear rumors of Paul W.S. Anderson writing another sequel to Resident Evil. After the hit "Resident Evil - Extinction" in which Alice (Milla Jovovich) finds her clones he had an epiphany and thought of a great twist and duly end to the relentless plot. Only this time, he turns to the real world for characters.

The sequel will have Genny Mush as the new chick and Dubya Bush as the new guy who gets bitten, gets infected with AIDS (play safe, as they say it) and dies of prostate cancer. Condi is the new black chick who gets sacrificed along with her lover, Dick ... Cheney. They kicked Ali Larter and picked up BB for the role of Claire who leads the group to Alaska, which by the way doesn't survive (bad leader, bad!). Heres another twist to the twisted story, Dr. Isaacs, who got killed by his own invention (the blue laser grid), comes back. Rumsfeld is the reincarnation of Dr. Isaacs ... how cool is that? (not very).

The story is set in the real world and events occur in real time (man I love that line from the show "24"). The world worries about larger things at stake while Bush takes his country to war with every country thats rich in petroleum resources, his longtime girlfriend and a heart throb(in the evil world) Genny Mush provides him support by genocide of his own countrymen (he is not a traitor...damn you if you think like it ... NOT!). Together they kill all Alices who stand in their way of turning the world into a HUGE water park (inspired from the show "Lil' Bush", Episode #4: Global Warming).

All in all its a sequel set to be the one you never want to see.

I urge everyone to watch "An Inconvenient Truth" (above picture from the documentary), which is by far the best documentary available today on global warming. Now I'm no fan of politicians, but Mr. Al Gore has delivered a truly eye opening presentation on the subject. It is not high on jargons and is mostly very easy to follow. Moreover, it sheds light on the authenticity and truthfulness of the notion "global warming is nothing but a scam". It disses by facts and figures the argument that it is a cyclical phenomenon and is the norm by proving whats happening now has not happened within the last 650,000 years. Lastly, it reveals some major secrets worth knowing.

It is a must watch for everyone, especially the citizens of the cities mentioned in the article above. you should all know what one degree temperature rise at the equator means at the north and south poles. I guarantee that you'll be amazed by the translation. I must say, after watching the documentary I think "The day after tomorrow" might not be that far.

Thank you for your support and heartfelt congratulations...but it wasn't really necessary...i had the situation under control (by paying really irrelevant people to show their faces on television in my support)...we've done the economy great and there are more banks than there is money in citizen's pocket...we have alleviated poverty through inflation and ... well basically we just started killing the poor so that there will be no poverty. People who have doubts should always remember Red Mosque, the karachi bridge collapse, 8th october 2005 earthquake (yeap they're still under development and will always remain that way).

We've privatized almost every thing (if it wasn't for the %^#^-ass chief justice we'd have sold the steel mill). We've also been successful in establishing rule of law-lessness...by virtue of which the lawless are the lawful (don't argue or we'll render you a terrorist). Thanks to us...now the lawyers and judges are a political party too, which proves our very (non-existent) democratic policies.

We (the army) is pleased to announce totalitarian control over civillians and you can do nothing about it. Thank you for listening (...even though it was your obligation).

On thursday night, while i was returning from work, my cell phone got snatched. I was three houses away, infront of my friend's house, when two "dudes" on a bike stopped the bike beside me. They had stalled the engine before coming to a stop, so i didn't even know some one stopped by, until they said something.

It was dark but not dark enough for me to not be able to see their faces. Oh I know their faces, I remember them. They were wearing dark clothes and both were dark coloured. the asked me for my cell phone three times. I tried to pretend that i wasn't getting them, which is true because i was being charmingly sarcastic with them. Though the charms didn't work and after the third time they flashed their "shiny metallic toy" and I gave it to them.

Its sad for me...the whole weekend i was sad and depressed. Sad because i have had that cell phone for about four and a half years and depressed due to the fact that my neighbourhood, my street, is not safe anymore. It kills me inside to think that i wasn't even able to protest and that filing a report wont do any good. The police are worst than the thieves and robbers (Story). I seriously hope that they eventually be corpulent asses so that they're not able to do normal things even.

Yesternight, it rained again here in Karachi. Well, morning to be exact. Streets are semi flooded, but if some one lives or works on higher floor of tall buildings, they maybe able to appreciate the view. Especially if they can view Pahar Ganj. Pahar Ganj is a really low and rather steep mountain that runs trhough Karachi. Today a cloud is touching that mountain at one corner.

The environment is pretty clean today, and I'm able to see the mountains that are beyond Pahar Ganj. Clouds are touching that mountain at two places. The view is very beautiful from the 14th floor.

Bad luck, my team lead left his camera home today.

Management 101

Today, as I was waiting for the van to pick me up from the stop, I happened to notice a one-of-its-kind situation. No wait I'm lying...it wasn't one-of-the-kind situation, it happens everywhere...especially in Pakiland. The bus stop is infront of a small hospital and theres a small garden infront of the hospital. In the garden there were four people standing around an electronic lawn mower.

For two to three minutes the group exchanged some dialogue which i was unable to hear due to the sound of (horridly bad) traffic. After that, one started the mower and started mowing the grass. The rest took a corner and watched the operator. They would sometimes tell him something and he'd operate it in a different way.

After six or so minutes I realized what the situation was. The three were managers of the guy operating the mower. A typical Pakistani style of management. The guy was so confused he wasn't looking at the ground, instead he kept looking at his three managers. Seeing this made me giggle because it reminded me of where I was going. Yeap, to work with more or less the same situation.

loathsome "feature"

Today I'm not going to talk about anything related to something happening in my life. I'm going to talk about the use of a simple feature in every operating system. You all might be thinking that it is another geeky thing that you don't even have a remote idea of. Wrong! Its so simple and so frequently used that you might miss it even though its sitting right on your desktop. It is the "trash can" (the picture is just to take your attention away from the mistakes in my post - isn't the trash can beautiful?).

Why did I bring this up? For a number of reasons, but first I'm going to write down (no matter how routine and simple it may sound) the reason why its there. It provides a safe place for the files you've deleted which you might require again.

That being established, I can now state two reasons why I'm discussing it. First reason is that when you delete something you should never be asked if you want to delete or no. I mean what the heck! For those who'd like to defend this approach by saying "what if you delete something ... " I'd tell them to read the reason for the creation for trash can. Seriously, how many times do you delete something by mistake? And if you do...you're a lousy person.

Second reason, the trash can should never be short of size. what does that mean? Trash can should be able to hold countless number of files/folders and of any size. For the people who know how file systems work, it is just a change of parent folder. It is as simple as that. Then why oh why "Winblows" (read: windows) repeatedly asks to permanently delete the files larger than the size of trash can?

I'm just too disappointed and have been let down by all the current operating systems.

I'm glad procom is over...there were a few really bad incidents, but it ended...i guess we're not in a position to say it ended well. I delivered a presentation on my research and I've learnt a few things

1. When delivering a presentation...you have to crack a few jokes, no matter how cheesy they are.
2. You have to stay lively and maintain a light mood.
3. You cannot impress everyone so pick out people who look interested.
4. Technical presentations are the most boring.
5. Always keep the Q/A session in the end, no matter if the end of the world is coming in the next five minutes

I wish I could have done a better job in procom and during the presentation...was representing FAST as a trend setter in research...so it was big deal. sigh.

The owner of my project has asked me to prepare a presentation for the module that I'm developing. I'll be presenting it tomorrow in ProCom, and in front of like almost 200 people, quarter of which will be from the corporate sector.

For those of you who don't know or are forgetful or are too lazy to find out( B :s )...I'm doing a research in "self healing systems" which is a part of "autonomic computing", and its a Linux project.

Yes, I'm at the verge of converting into a complete Linux geek...which happened totally unwillingly (stop laughing nabeel...) and I'll soon be getting thick nerdy glasses too! Sigh.

My USB HD got electrocuted so its a sad day for me. Will take one more day to get a replacement.

My bro left for Faisalabad today, so when he was leaving I handed him my broken USB HD, which will be collected at the train station by a person who works at our office and will take it to the shop that I ... err ... my bro bought it from and will probably bring it back tonight all fixed!

Feels good when your work is done for you. :D

Now i can utilize my time working on my project or read some crap that i didn't have to if i had chosen an easier project.

Hard drive

I have to go and get my USB hard drive fixed. I gave it to a friend and the next day when he hands it to me, it wasn't working. I'm worried a bit, though its still in the warranty but I don't know what happened to it...and did I mention it has over 80 GB of backup data!?

I'm trying to muster all strength, its around 35 C outside...and I...yes i don't want to go get myself half boiled in this scorching heat. I guess I'll wait another hour and then go.

weird passenger

I was so tired yesterday evening that I almost forgot the most interesting circumstance. When I got on the bus for university there was space for one more person to sit at the back seat of the bus. So I asked one of the persons to move and make room for me. To everyones surprise, the guy instead of moving got off the seat and sat on the floor.

I was like..."hmmm, either the seat is very uncomfortable or he is partially deaf" but he didn't fail to hear me, he just acted differently. Anyways, I said to him that I didn't ask him to get off the seat, I just asked him to move a bit and make room. He sat on the seat again...but he started saying to me, "No one gives their seat to elders these days, instead they ask for it".

By that time I was thinking what the hell is this guy's problem. Then i started ignoring him...and paid the bus fare. I was waiting for the conductor to return the change to me when the guy started asking for money!! and i was like "ooooh, so this is what he wants". Then he suddenly got off at the next stop, which thankfully happened very soon. He didn't look like a karachiite at all, was evident from his accent.

Blogspot doesn't have an import option!? i mean ... no import option? I'm very disappointed to find this out.

The only reason i want to move to a new blog is that people who are not member of yahoo 360 cannot comment on my blog entries...and I'm sick of writing posts on which no one can comment. Since no one I know has a 360 account, there are almost no comments.

So as i see there are two options for me regarding the blog...
1. Start a new one...i mean this one.
2. Go back to the old yahoo 360 blogging life of loneliness...and be known as the lonesome blogger (which is not funny in anyway!)
